Owned commerce

Marketplaces led to owned storefronts.

Shopify and WordPress created more control — and a new set of technical problems to solve.

Scale / context
Prior professional material covers 10+ Shopify builds/projects and 15+ WordPress sites, alongside large-catalog owned ecommerce operations.

I built and operated Shopify and WordPress/WooCommerce sites across books, home décor, jewelry and high-SKU commerce, including Universal Reads, Amegweb and Efinito.

Owning more of the customer experience

Marketplaces are powerful distribution systems, but owned stores create control over merchandising, content, brand, customer experience, offers and international market structure. That control also means the operator becomes responsible for more of the technology.

Shopify introduced Liquid, theme customization, metafields, variant UX, product-page conversion work and large imports. WordPress and WooCommerce introduced hosting, PHP limits, plugins, search performance and much more direct responsibility for infrastructure.

Universal Reads became a large-catalog laboratory

Universal Reads combined several parts of my earlier experience: books, international ecommerce, large catalogs, product data, Google Shopping, Merchant Center and paid acquisition. Tens of thousands of book listings made automation a requirement rather than a convenience.

Amegweb and Efinito added different problems — high-SKU WordPress architecture, search, technical SEO, home décor, jewelry, conversion design and category experimentation. Each venture became another environment in which operating and technical skills had to work together.
