Direct sourcing work in China and Yiwu added supplier discovery, factory negotiation, procurement, product costing, bulk buying and cross-border logistics to my experience.
Understanding the price before the selling price
Sourcing made product economics more concrete. A selling price is the result of many decisions made earlier: supplier price, order quantity, manufacturing choices, packaging, freight, duties, warehousing, marketplace fees and advertising.
Working closer to suppliers helped me understand where margin is created and where it disappears. It also made negotiation and procurement part of my ecommerce skill set rather than separate business functions.
Cross-border operations became normal
International sourcing introduced more dependencies and more opportunities for failure. Communication, timelines, quality, freight and inventory all had to align.
That operational complexity prepared me for the later move into international marketplace accounts and global DTC ecommerce, where every country adds another layer of rules, delivery expectations and commercial decisions.
